Having good-looking hair is part of having a healthy and attractive appearance that there is a growing demand for over-the-counter remedies. Thin, brittle, and dry hair can be a matter of concern for many people. Naturally, they look for solutions and one of the hot ideas is Methyl-sulfonyl-methane (MSM) for hair growth.
Have you heard about MSM hair growth, and wonder whether it can help you? MSM is a sulfur-based compound found that is naturally occurring in our body as well as in foods like seafoods, milk, tea, coffee, tea, green vegetables, garlic, and onions. MSM can also be found in tablets, capsules, powders, and topical preparations. MSM was touted to help chemical tissue repair and touted to promote hair growth.

What is MSM?
MSM helps your body build collagen; one of the body’s most plentiful proteins responsible for strengthening your tendons, internal organs, bones, as well as keeps your skin and hair supple. If you have a collagen deficiency, your body can’t repair even minor injuries. Collagen occurs naturally in many foods we eat, but scientists believe that it is destroyed by cooking that’s why it needs to be replaced by taking supplements to improve hair growth rates, skin and nail health.
There haven’t been any conclusive study linking MSM to hair growth but since there is sulfur in keratin, it helps with increased hair growth because it is one of the main proteins of our hair.
Benefits of MSM hair growth
MSM helps with healthy hair growth because it gives your body one of its principal building blocks for hair. It is believed to treat osteoarthritis because it can build replacement cells destroyed during the aging process. Similarly, the idea came about that MSM can be useful for hair growth because it can increase hair cells leading to thicker and longer hair.
No adverse side effects have been reported. Many people experienced improved hair growth after a few weeks of use, and the texture appeared thicker and healthy.

How long does it take for MSM to work?
MSM benefits come in a pretty long list. MSM can be found practically in all living things – in rain water, oceans, and amino acids, taurine, cystine, cysteine, and methionine. So, how long does MSM take for you to get long and healthy hair?
Generally, it will take about one week to two months for you to see the results. It normally takes a minimum of two to four months before you notice the benefits because this is about the time your body will absorb the nutrients.
It is suggested that, you see your doctor before you take MSM if you have a medical condition to ensure that it is safe to take with your prescription medicine. MSM has few reported side effects like cystic acne if it is taken in higher doses. There were concerns about the effect on the liver when taken for a long period of time. It may lead to depression in some people.

How is MSM Taken?
MSM is available in capsules or tablets, and powder or liquid in varying strengths and can be taken as a dietary supplement taken two or three times daily. The liquid and powder can be mixed with fruits as a health drink.
There is no Recommended Daily Allowance (RDA) for MSM but high doses might cause diarrhea, nausea, bloating, fatigue, kidney problems, headache, itching, insomnia, or worsening of allergy symptoms. Always remember to follow the manufacturer’s dosage directions on the label.
If you decide to try it, start small at 500 mg and work your way slowly up to 1000 mg, although most experts suggest around 1500 mg each day. While some people have taken as much as 5000mg per day with no ill effects, don’t overdo it. MSM is not toxic, in fact; it detoxifies you and flushes out of your system naturally after twelve hours. It is also good for your bones, arthritis, and osteoporosis.
Many people combine MSM hair growth supplement with [easyazon_link asin=”B000GG87V2″ locale=”US” new_window=”default” nofollow=”default” tag=”fairyhairs-20″ add_to_cart=”default” cloaking=”default” localization=”default” popups=”default”]500 mg vitamin C[/easyazon_link] to help MSM work effectively. Some of them noticed less shedding and faster hair growth after three months. One-word of advice, make sure you find a reliable supplier as the purity and quality of MSM varies from brand to brand.
Make sure to do your homework to know the toxicology inhuman studies or ask your doctor about it.

MSM Hair Growth Results
Although no medical studies have proven the effectiveness of MSM for hair growth, many people can attest to the excellent results. Many people have frequently colored their hair because their hair is growing faster.
And those with thin hair have noticed that their hair feel and look thicker. Improved skin texture and nail growth has also been reported by the users.
Our hair typically sheds about 100 strands everyday and grows about half an inch every month. Many people using MSM experience double in hair growth rate, and the shedding has decreased to twenty strands a day which ultimately results to thicker hair.

Is MSM hair growth for everyone?
What may work for some people may not work for others, and this just happens to be so because 15 percent of people who tried MSM for hair growth swear it helped stabilize hair loss. The hair cycle is very complex and there are variations, to some extent, for everyone which explains why MSM worked for some and not for others. However, since no documentation has been filed to prove that this really prevents hair loss, caution is advised before you decide to take it.

March 23, 2016 #5 AuthorI have been taking about 2,000mg of MSM powder for the last 3 weeks and in the last week I have notice some new hair growth but I’m also noticing a lot more hair shed and my bun is looking smaller when I put my hair up. Is this part of the initial reaction to MSM or should I stop this supplement completely? I really can’t afford to lose anymore hair after the amount I lost when coming off of birth control. :/

July 31, 2016 #6 AuthorI think you should stop all together. You probably should have started off taking a smaller dosage. It also depends on what you were taking with it because vitamin C goes hand and hand with MSM in order for it to really work. I hope this helps.

September 13, 2016 #7 AuthorAnytime after taking a product and you see negative effects than what the product boast, stop taking it immediately!!! Go get a health checkup it, something else might be going on in your body or it could be the supplement. Better to check to make sure.

February 28, 2018 #12 AuthorI started taking MSM some months ago to help with arthritis in my wrist. I had never heard about it to aid hair growth. Over the last several weeks I noticed that my hair looked as if it was having a growth spurt……wishful thinking, I thought to myself. However since then, several people have commented on the length, including family members who see me regularly. I have just googled whether it can affect hair growth and was so surprised to find all the articles on it. So from my experience, yes it looks like it works!
